Overarching Question:   What will you do if you ever get bullied by someone?

Values Acquired:   21st Century Competencies
• Learn about Relationship Management: Seeking & providing help.
Students learn that no problem is too big to be resolved. If they need help, they can look for friends for a listening ear or ask adults (parents / teachers) for guidance.

Art Knowledge
  Elements of Art
Acquired:   • Shapes (2-dimensional flat shapes)
    • Forms (3-dimensional forms)
    • Colours (Monochromatic & Analogous colours)

    Principle of Design
    • Dominance
(When you are planning your drawing, make sure that the bully and the victim are easily identifiable. The bully most probably will stand alone and at a distance away from the crowd of the friends and the victim.)

Teacher uses her drawing to demostrate the way to compose the picture:

  Important tip/question in drawing:
Where do you think the victims usually stand among a group of people?
Victims usually stand at the back because they are often made to feel small and helpless by the bully. Hence, you can draw the victim(s) looking small and insecure, or is hiding behind the back of the others. When the victim is alone, he/she may hide in a corner.

Lesson Hook:   Story Sharing:
Leave Me Alone by Kes Gray and Lee Wildish

A young boy struggles to stand up against his bully. When the bully came again, his friends showed him that eight bonded strength is stronger than one. When the friends stood together and told the bully to leave, the bully actually did.

    Story Discussion:
Bullying is a problem in school. Hence, it is good to address this issue to the students and discuss with them feasible solutions to solve the problem if they ever come across one.

Use a set of pre-prepared inquiry questions to get students to talk with students. Hear from them about their real-life experiences with bullying and how they hope to make a change to such a situation around them if they or their friends/classmates ever encounter one.

    Questions:
1.   Why did the boy look so sad?
It was because he was afraid of someone who was bullying him.

2.   Why did the big bully walked away when the animal friends told him to?
When the bully saw that so many friends were standing up bravely to support the boy, the bully realised that he/she was outnumbered and became afraid and left him alone.

3.   What do you think are the qualities of true friends?
True friends stand by you in times of trouble and they are also honest with you.

This session will help improve on their relationship management skills on "seeking & providing help", one of the 21st century competencies to acquire.

Although all these character have different characteristics and all have their own weaknesses, they get along well with one another and show support to one another when anyone gets in trouble. For example, Mr Bump is careless and often gets into trouble unintentionally. But his friends are always there for him.

Encourage the children to come up with characters of their friends / family members and draw them in the style of Mr Men and Little Miss. Show that the people who care for them will stand up for them when they faced irritating bullies.

Lesson Takeaway:   No problem is too big to be resolved. If student needs help, he/she can look for friends/adults for a listening ear and adults for assistance.
