Students' Artworks

The students were drawn into the art lesson with the reading of the
interesting story book lesson hook. We discussed about how much their parents
love them and the large amount of effort that their parents have put in
to create a safe and cosy environment to
bring them up just like the love birds.

  Love Birds Drawing by Torres
Torres started his drawing with a single large egg and immediately realised that
he would not have enough space to draw his birds unless he drew them extremely huge.
This problem became a good learning opportunity to apply creativity in his work.
Torres was asked to relate his work to a photo frame and think about how
the birds can display the photo at their nest like what we see in the cartoons.
He is encouraged to think calm for creative solutions that next time
he meets with problem as it is another opportunity to make
his work even more interesting.

Students' Artworks

There was a twist to one of these art lessons.
After reading the love birds story in an all boys student care centre, the boys
responded that they did not like love birds and do not want to draw.

I quickly discussed and engaged them with something that
most boys are interested in.... soccer.

The boys became more excited about the drawing activity.
We also discuss and imagine aloud their birds in different kinds of funny
situations. At last, they were engaged in this lesson.

"Loving father bird" drawing by Rafeal
There is only one boy who followed the
theme on Love Birds but interpreted the storyline in his own way...
Mummy flew out to look for food while daddy bird stays home to warm the eggs,
which was inspired by the movie "The March of the Penguins".
whereby daddy penguin stay home to take care of the egg.
His mum shared with us that she takes pride in
his understanding and demonstration of
a sense of responsibility through his work.

Teacher's Lesson Reflection

Some children storybooks can magically inform children
from all over the world about one another's way of life and culture.
Given another chance to teach the lesson again, I shall share
with the boys an inspiring story about how a group of teenage boys
living in Brazilian tried to overcome the odds and hardships in their daily lives
to seize time and opportunities to play with their friends to level up their soccer skills.
I hope that our boys will be inspired by how these senior boys worked hard
towards achieving their dreams. When they succeeded in life,
these Brazilian boys also help they themselves and
their families to lead a better life.
The interesting twist in this story comes when
young girls are also encouraged to chase the dreams such as soccer,
which are seemingly set aside conventionally for the boys.
The main character's younger girl proved her worth of salt
through her passion as well as daily
training with her brother.
Storybook Title: Football Star
Story by: Mina Javaherbin
Ilustrated by: Renato Alarcao
The page on this book reads, "I am Paulo Marcelo Feliciano
and when I'm a football star, my mother won't have to work long hours
and I won't have to miss her so much. All day, I help Senhor da Silva fish.
After work, I practise soccer with him."
Senhor da Silva finally says, "Felino, enough for today."
The grey clouds suddenly sail away - away from the beach,
away from my game.

We plan and practise our game. Jose will fly, Givo will bounce,
Carlos will kick, and Felino will score!

We're a player short. "Maria?" I ask my team.
Givo votes no. Pedro votes yes and Carlos is fine either way.
It's up to me, and my vote is for change. I wave to my sister
and say, "It's time!" and Maria runs onto the field.
